Would Paris be Paris without the Eiffel Tower? The Grande Dame is famous the world over and radiates prestige over the surrounding area.
320 metres high, the most renowned construction from the Universal Exhibition of 1889 is the highest point from where you can view Paris. Accessed by steps to the 2nd floor (where the Jules Vernes restaurant is located) you need to take the lift to the tower's third and last floor at a height of 276 metres.
Seen from the Trocadero, this architectural landmark is magnificent and is even more imposing from the lawns of the Champ de Mars, which was once agricultural marsh lands, a military training area for the nearby Ecole Militaire and even a venue for horse racing (in the 19th century). An immense expanse of open park land (no fence marks its boundary), the Champ de Mars is ideal for just relaxing, romantic strolls down its tree-lined avenues and for picnics with friends, a firm favourite amongst the international tourists visiting Paris.
In the evening, the 20 000 light bulbs on the Eiffel Tower twinkle to the applause of the crowd. A moment to savour, which even the Parisians themselves never grow tired of.
