A genuine village in the heart of the French capital, both typical and atypical, Montmartre is the picturesque neighbourhood of Paris.
Montmartre is old Paris, she who held vibrant local dances for the working man, Paris of cobbled streets, flower-draped houses and artists.
On the Place du Tertre, one of the highest points in Paris (located on the famous butte Montmartre), you forget every other view of the city to take in the picturesque atmosphere: cafes and restaurants with their 'cheeky' Parisian waiters, multitudes of painters ready to 'fire off your portrait', bohemian musicians playing in the street itself...
Montmartre is, of course, also Sacre-Coeur, one of the symbols of Paris that you can reach by the funicular railway or to the top of a long flight of steps where (for hours on end) you can marvel at a breathtaking view of the city.
There are also vineyards and windmills in Montmartre... Sometimes you think it's all a dream but it's all real here and all accessible on foot, like the rue Lepic or the Place des Abbesses (teeming with fine food merchants, bakers and cafes), for example, where one can linger before going downhill to Pigalle and her raucous nightlife.
