The Eiffel tower conceived by Gustave Eiffel on the occasion of the 1889 Universal International Exhibition, prone to controversy and admiration at the same time, and which has now become the symbol of Paris.
A few figures: was 300,51 m high at the time of construction and today measures 320,76 m including the antenna, weighs 7 000 tons, is comprised of 12 000 pieces of metal and 2 500 000 rivets and has 1 652 steps. 40 tons of paint are applied to it every seven years.
The Champ de Mars is not only a large green open space stretching from the Eiffel Tower, it also is one of the places which changed the most in the course of Paris’ history and witnessed the most varied events.
In 1670, Liberal Bruant is commissioned to build the Hotel des Invalides as a home for 4000 injured war veterans. Its construction on the Plaine de Grenelle lasts more than five years and the dome’s one, designed by Jules Hardouin-Mansart, begins in 1706.
The church is then built between 1677 and 1735. This complex of buildings is considered as the most beautiful religious monument ever built under the reign of Louis the XIVth.
